The Marri Holly Cow Family

+JDH Marri Holly Manso 50/6 cow family at V8 Ranch

Origins

Before Marri Holly was known as the big grey cow grazing in our pastures, she was known as a powerful show female that was difficult to get around in the show ring. In fact, in 2000, when Judge Marcus Shackleford slapped her as National Champion in Dallas, we were right there with Miss V8 716/5, that year’s Reserve Champion. Raised by the J. Boone Koonce family of J.D. Hudgins, Inc., this JDH female carried the T brand on her right shoulder.  We’re most closely linked to our cousins at the J.D. Hudgins Ranch by the Forgason and Koonce families. The T brand stands for Temple Koonce. In our family, we knew him as “Uncle Temple,” Mollie’s uncle. Sometime after Marri Holly’s show career, Johnny Joyce brokered the sale of this popular female to Watson Land and Cattle. After keeping her at the Watson ranch in Jennings, Louisiana for about a year, Mr. Hilton Watson, longtime business partner of V8, said, “Send the cow to Jim.” Marri Holly returned to Wharton County to stay, and her outcross genetics continue to make an impact today.

Lineage

Marri Holly’s sire, (+)JDH Sir Marri Manso 557/4, sold for a record-breaking sum to a Brazilian rancher. The progeny of (+)JDH Sir Marri Manso 557/4 are still successful worldwide.

A Glimpse of Magic

Marri Holly’s first flush to +JDH Sir Avery Manso 159/7 instantly put her in the V8 record books as one of the all-time greats. The flush’s most famous female, Miss V8 954/6, burst onto the Brahman scene being named International Grand Champion as a heifer calf. Miss V8 954/6’s untimely death, prior to the birth of her first calf, left us wondering what might have been. Her flushmate sister, +Miss V8 947/6, has carried the torch well, earning her own legendary rank and status.

Modern Influence

This cow family has been in production for less than 20 years at V8 Ranch, but what a couple of decades it has been! Boasting three International Champion or Reserve Champion titles from a very small pool of animals, we’re confident that the biggest success from this family’s influence is yet to come.
