When breeding Brahman cattle with Bos taurus breeds, such as Hereford, you’ll find remarkable enhancements in traits like growth, milk production, fertility, and longevity, surpassing other breed crosses and purebreds.

Brahman half-blood calves and those out of Brahman F-1 cows are known for fast gains. Studies have shown that calves with Brahman influence have the potential to gain more weight per day than many other breeds.

Brahman-cross calves are an excellent option for hot and humid regions. These calves are more desirable to raise in tropical or subtropical areas or during summer months when other breeds, like those from Europe and Britain, become less efficient at converting their feed into weight gain. The Brahman-cross calves have a strong ability to continue gaining weight and finishing well, which provides an economic advantage for producers in these climates.

In addition to their efficiency in hot and humid climates, Brahman and Brahman-cross cattle are also known for producing high-quality carcasses. These cattle have a trait called “high cutability,” which means their carcasses have a high percentage of lean meat compared to fat. This results in a carcass that yields a large amount of usable meat with relatively little excess fat. This is an advantageous characteristic for producers and consumers, as it means more of the animal can be processed into desirable, salable beef products.

Advantages of Raising Brahman Cattle

• Brahman cattle flourish in warm climates. Thanks to their numerous sweat glands and extra skin folds, they can handle temperatures over 100°F.
• Brahman cattle breeds have long lifespans, as long as 20 years. This means they maintain high fertility rates well into their later years, much later than most other cattle breeds.
• Brahman are naturally resistant to pests like ticks and mosquitoes.
• Brahman cows generally exhibit strong maternal instincts, high milk production, and good fertility. 
• With focused breeding efforts, carcass quality continues to improve.

Challenges of Raising Brahman Cattle

• While Brahmans thrive in the heat, they’re less tolerant of extremely cold weather. There are Brahman cattle happily raised in Canada, but they require extra care during a cold winter. 
• Brahman heifers require a longer development period before breeding. However, allowing them time to mature before breeding yields long-term benefits. For instance, Brahman heifers typically reach sexual maturity between 18 and 20 months, and at V8, we target our females to calves at three years.
• Brahmans tend to have less marbling than some British breeds.
• The availability of polled (hornless) genetics is still behind other breeds, though it is on the rise. Over the past few years, we have introduced several exceptional polled Brahman cattle to our herd. • Brahman cattle are large framed, which means they might need more time or have higher nutritional requirements to reach their mature weight. However, the advantage for breeders lies in their efficiency— Brahmans thrive on resources that other cattle breeds would reject. At V8 Ranch, our biggest Brahman bull, Mr. V8 604/7 “Man of Steel,” tips the scales at an impressive 2,690 pounds, while our lightest mature bull, Mr. V8 274/7 “George,” still weighs a substantial 2,230 pounds. As a comparison point, the average Hereford bull weighs in around 1,800 pounds.

Challenges of Raising Hereford Cattle

• Herefords don’t do well in extreme heat or with pests. In general, the thick coats of Hereford cattle are not well suited to hot climates.
• Compared to other beef cattle breeds, Hereford cattle may have a slower growth rate, which can impact their time to market.
