Judging Brahmans in His Backyard
One of the world’s leading Brahman cattle judges, Jim Williams has judged major livestock shows all over the world. He served as an Open Show Judge for 2002 ABBA National Brahman show, and this coming November, he’s back again to judge the 2021 ABBA National Brahman Show. What makes his return to the ABBA National Brahman Show extra special? Well, for starters, it’s in his backyard. This year’s show will be held in Rosenberg, Texas, which is about a 30-minute drive from Boling, Texas, the home of V8 Ranch.
Of course, V8 Ranch isn’t the only Brahman cattle ranch a stone’s throw from Rosenberg, TX. Wharton County, the neighboring county to Rosenberg, has the highest concentration of award-winning Brahmans in the world. Wharton County boasts a human population of just under 42,000 people, yet the population of registered Brahman cattle is about 19,300. This would be like adding half a million Brahmans to the city of Dallas, TX, or a million Brahmans to the population of Houston, TX. Unlike, Houston or Dallas, however, there’s plenty of room for all those Brahmans and the legendary ranches that breed them. Like V8 Ranch, J.D. Hudgins Ranch, Pierce Ranch, and a handful of other ranches are also located in Wharton County.
Getting Ready for the 2021 ABBA National Brahman Show
This year’s show will kick off on November 2 at 8:00 am and conclude on November 6 at 5:00 pm. Visit the 2021 ABBA National Brahman Show Facebook page for information on the Hyatt host hotel in Sugar Land, TX and other up-to-date announcements. If you haven’t already entered, get on it – the early entry deadline for the show is Monday, October 14, 2021; the late entry deadline is Friday, October 22, 2021.
Monday, November 1 is an optional move-in day.
Tuesday, November 2 is check-in followed by a Welcome Dinner.
Wednesday, November 3 will be devoted to classes and training sessions followed by a reception, dinner, and live entertainment at J.D. Hudgins Ranch in Hungerford, TX. (Did you know that the reigning Williams family matriarch, Mollie Williams, wife to the late, great Sloan Williams, grew up on the J.D. Hudgins Ranch?)
Thursday, November 4 will be jam-packed with events and opportunities. The morning will start with a trade show and Heritage Cattle Company’s Family Field Day. The afternoon and evening will feature a seminar, previews, sale parties, and of course, the 2021 ABBA National Brahman Show Spotlight Sale.
Friday, November 5 is the Open Female Show, where you’ll see Open Show Judge, Jim Williams, in action. Jim has received many accolades for his judging prowess over the years, but some of the highest praise comes from the message boards of competitors in the show ring like this comment: “My favorite judge of all time is Jim Williams from V8. He doesn’t hold anything back, and you better be able to show because it will affect your placing.” You can read more on Jim Williams’ judging background here.
Saturday, November 6, Jim Williams will preside over the Open Bull Show. The Junior Bull Show will follow, judged by Randall Tipp.
Sunday, November 7 will be devoted to the Junior Female Show, judged by Dean Fuchs.
A detailed schedule of events for the show can be found here.
Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch
Because Jim Williams will preside as Open Show Judge at the 2021 ABBA National Brahman Show, you won’t see any V8 Brahmans in the show ring. But you can visit V8 Ranch. Other members of the Williams family will be there to welcome you and conduct tours. If you’d like to schedule a visit prior to, during, or after the National Brahman Show, please reach out to us for an appointment and we will do our best to accommodate you.
We hope you’ll join us in the heart of Texan Brahman culture as we celebrate this magnificent breed and enjoy fellowship together. We look forward to seeing you soon!
